Broadband Penetration: Dr. Pantami gets commendation from NCC boss
The Honourable Minister of Communications, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami has been commended for his swift action in addressing the right of way challenge, which has resulted in 35% increase in broadband penetration in Nigeria in less than 50 days in office.
The Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Umar Garba Danbatta gave the commendation today in his remarks when he led a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), to a working visit at the Ministry’s Headquarters, Abuja.
According to Professor Danbatta, the challenge has been in existence since 2015, however stressed that In less than 50 days in office as Honourable Minister of Communications, Dr Pantami has addressed this surmountable challenge without much issues.
According to the NCC boss, the delegation was at the Ministry to officially table challenges facing the telecom sector such as the absence of a digital economy policy in Nigeria, non-adherence to the national economic council’s resolution on the right of way, vandalization of telecom infrastructures, multiple taxations of telecom operators, among others.
In his remarks, the Honourable Minister said, “We are coming up with a digital economy policy, it would be made public before all stakeholders within the coming days, digital economy occupies 16% of the world economy, upon assumption of office, I was surprised to find out Nigeria does not have one.
“I am working on behalf of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, I have met Mr President on three different occasions to brief him about the progress and challenges facing the sector, I am here to serve Nigeria with a view of leaving a lasting legacy”, he noted.
